ADTRAN Delivers Industry’s Most Complete Converged Access Architecture

ADTRAN’s Advanced Services Architecture delivers on the promise of consolidated business, residential and mobile backhaul service delivery of multi-Gigabit rates at any point in the network

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 1, 2013– ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation networking solutions, today announced the introduction of the ADTRAN Advanced Services Architecture. Available across the entire ADTRAN ultra broadband portfolio, the ADTRAN Advanced Services Architecture helps carriers make the transition towards network convergence and service consolidation by offering a robust, resilient and redundant infrastructure that is ideally suited for triple-play as well as service level agreement (SLA) based business and backhaul services. This breakthrough architecture is optimized to deliver a mix of residential, enterprise and mobile backhaul services over a common, next-generation network while offering advanced service management and forward-looking network automation capabilities.

Historically, wireline service providers have deployed independent networks to meet the needs of their residential, enterprise and backhaul customers, with each network developed for their specific customer needs. Today, service providers are being challenged to deliver Gigabit-ready residential services, high-bandwidth and widely available cloud connectivity services for enterprise customers, and scalable Ethernet and optical access for mobile backhaul and data center connectivity – all requiring varying service level agreements (SLAs), simplified service automation requirements. In order to transition towards an all-fiber future, while maintaining the capability to deploy any of these services rapidly at any point in the network, it is no longer practical to deploy separate overlay networks to address each of these market segment needs.

“Two key trends we see in today’s fixed access market – higher bandwidth demand and service convergence – are coming to a head as service providers are looking for ways to build out a profitable network for the future,” said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst, broadband access and pay TV atInfonetics Research. “Service providers need a multi-Gigabit service architecture and compact, scalable FTTx ultra broadband solutions that are optimized for premium services to reach the largest addressable market possible with the right economic value proposition.”

The ADTRAN Advanced Services Architecture features the following:

  • Network automation and services management with web-services APIs to drastically simplify end-to-end provisioning of FTTP, FTTN, and Carrier Ethernet services, while abstracting service layer functions to support the transition to SDN and NFV environments. Integrated service assurance tools enable operators to manage and monitor subscriber SLAs.
  • Optimized multi-service access platform (MSAP) solutions for both ANSI and ETSI markets which include a compact, edge-optimized MSAN for remote cabinet and building basement aggregation for a full range of services access modules. It also includes a high-capacity, centralized aggregation solution for larger cabinet and central office applications.
  • High-density, non-blocking fiber aggregation for 1G and GPON service delivery with non-blocking backplane connectivity. The architecture also includes high-capacity switch fabrics support for non-blocking access to service modules and up to 80G of network uplink capacity.
  • Full range of network termination equipment and customer premises equipment including broadband-optimized gateways, ONTs and ONUs to support zero-touch activation of enterprise services, small cell backhaul, and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) locations.
  • Integrated packet optical aggregation and transport provides more efficient edge aggregation and separation of residential, enterprise and backhaul services. Network and subscriber interfaces include high-density DWDM, 10G, and OTN, ideally suited for data center and mobile network connectivity.
  • Network transformation with VDSL2 and system level vectoring to support 100+ Mbps residential/small cell and 800 Mbps enterprise service delivery over existing copper facilities. A full range of EoCu and EoTDM aggregation and gateway solutions deliver SLA-based, Ethernet services over existing infrastructure, while easing the transition to an all-fiber network.
  • TDM transition across three key areas with integrated voice gateway to easily migrate from TDM to VoIP architectures for voice transformation in FTTx and switch collapse applications; integrated TDM gateway for migration of TDM services onto an all-Ethernet network; and ADTRAN’s industry-leading IPBG portfolio to support advanced IP Telephony solutions.
  • Greater sustainability by the elimination of multi-box aggregation and enterprise gateway solutions and optimized architectural models to more efficiently deliver services while lowering operational costs and driving down power consumption.

“All service segments in the wireline network are converging towards a future-state that consists of high-capacity, SLA-based Ethernet and wavelength services that can be delivered at any point in the network with rapid service activation,” said Robert Conger, director, product management, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “The ADTRAN Advanced Services Architecture is enabling our customers to address this industry transition in a way that is truly delivering on the promise of consolidating and integrating business, residential and mobile backhaul service delivery onto a single network.”
