5G & Mobile xHaul

5G deployments have been focused on the Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) flavour of 5G, which delivers increased data rate, primarily to support entertainment applications, such as ultra HD and 3D video, Work & Play in the cloud, as well as all sorts of alternative realities – AR, IR, VR and MR.
The transport of data between the Radio Access Network (RAN) and the core is conventionally known as backhaul, in line with the terminology of previous generations of mobile
communications. However, with 5G, there has been a shift, with a greater focus on fronthaul and mid-haul, collectively known as xHaul. The shift provides greater control and flexibility to fit different requirements and better coordination for the efficient use of radio resources and performance features.
