What is Alien Wavelength?

Within the realm of DWDM systems, an ‘alien wavelength’ embodies a coloured optical signal stemming from networking equipment that stands apart or is ‘alien’ from the optical line system. These wavelengths can emerge from various sources like transponders of differing manufacturers or technology, such as a router equipped with colored optics. Notably, alien wavelengths operate independently from the management of the line system’s NMS and remain transparent within the optical line systems.

Alien Aware Networking®

Alien Aware Networking®, is an innovative solution designed to seamlessly integrate and manage alien wavelengths throughout their entire lifecycle. The approach empowers comprehensive monitoring, analysis, and centralised management, irrespective of suppliers or technology variations employed within a single network operator or across interconnected networks. Leveraging the power of Multi-Vendor, Multi-Technology, Open Optical network automation facilitated by netFLEX, LightRiver’s services and software enable network operators to fully harness the advantages of alien wavelengths while mitigating the current limitations they pose.

Identify, Isolate, and Manage Alien Waves

In addition to automating disaggregated networks to support Alien Wavelength Services, The Kenton Group and LightRiver offer comprehensive assistance in designing, testing, constructing, and deploying your Open Optical network efficiently and at scale.
As the transport network undergoes rapid evolution towards Open, Disaggregated, Plug-and-Play architectures, the need for end-to-end network management has never been more crucial. The netFLEX optical domain controller is equipped to handle DWDM Open Line, Open ROADM, NextGen DCI/Waves platforms, and the latest Packet Edge transport, facilitating real-time inventory management, programmable analytics, and control automation. The ultimate goal is to achieve comprehensive management of the underlying wavelength services.
