For the second year in a row, RAD has won a Fierce Innovation Award for its cyber security technology. The award was presented for RAD’s Megaplex-4 multi-service platform, which features a secure-by-design networking architecture. The Megaplex-4, an essential element in RAD’s Service Assured Networking (SAN) solutions portfolio for critical infrastructure, is widely deployed throughout the world by power utilities, air traffic control, transportation systems and government agencies. Power utilities rely on Megaplex for operational WAN, ruggedised LAN communications and Tele-protection, among other applications. It is strategically designed to serve as a single-point-of-entry to manage all electronic access to substations and their cyber assets. Furnished with multi-layer cyber security tools that include MACsec and IPsec encryption and verification, a SCADA-aware firewall, IEEE 802.1X network access control, and a computing host for other proven security mechanisms, the Megaplex-4 provides a complete arsenal to defend the integrity of bulk electric systems (BES).
“Power utilities today face three major challenges: the persistent and growing cyber security threat from a range of malicious actors; the need to transition to packet-switched networks; and stringent evolving regulatory requirements, most notably NERC-CIP requirements, which secure the assets required for operating North America’s BES,†explains Amir Barnea, RAD’ Head of Critical Infrastructure Line of Business.
“The Megaplex-4 not only allows power utilities to meet and even exceed the NERC CIP v5 requirements, but also enables them to migrate to packet networks while still supporting legacy circuit-based services, all in a compact single-box platform,†he continues. “We are honoured and humbled that the Fierce Innovation Awards committee recognised the merits of our solution.â€
In 2014, RAD won the same award for its SecFlow-2 SCADA-aware switch/router.
The Fierce Innovation Awards: Energy Edition is a unique industry program sponsored by the publishers of Smart Grid News. The winners were selected by a panel of judges that included Lisa Davidson, Director of Customer Programs, San Diego Gas & Electric; Joseph E. Svachula, Vice President of Smart Grid and Technology, Commonwealth Edison; Dr. Steven Pratt, Chief Technology Officer, CenterPoint Energy; Jason Handley, Director of Smart Grid Emerging Technology and Operations, Duke Energy; Joe Solari, Director of IT Smart Grid Technologies, Ameren Corporation; Laney Brown, Director of Smart Grid Initiatives, Iberdrola USA; and Elizabeth Murphy, Vice President of External Affairs, PECO. The judges evaluated submissions based on technology innovation, financial impact, market validation, ability to integrate into existing network environments, and end-user customer experience.
